Officials will turn the sod on Manitoba’s third aboriginal-owned casino Thursday while announcing a partnership with an American Indian band.

At 10 a.m. Thursday, dignitaries with shovels full of dirt will mark the start of construction of the Spirit Sands Casino.

The gaming palace will be built on Highway 5, about 15 km south of Carberry and adjacent to Spruce Woods Provincial Park, on land owned by the Swan Lake First Nation.

Plans for the $40-million casino include 300 slot machines, 5 gaming tables, food and beverage services, and likely a hotel at some point in the future.

Rob Ballantyne, an economic development business analyst with the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, said Thursday will be an exciting day when years of planning will come to fruition
